Exam Practice: How has using the internet helped you to create your production work

I used the internet frequently throughout this project and my previous work. It helped in finding existing products as I was able to look at numerous different examples on many platforms for example video, audio and print.
It also helped in researching my target audience as I was able to link products from the same genre as mine to the people who consume them. I did this by looking at existing products and their repsonses and also by using networking sites to gather opinions and views.
The internet did provide a few ideas for my work such as the choice to have a storyline alongside the shots of the band for the video as it would help illustrate the meanings to the target audience.
I feel that I am fairly familiar with all of the technology I have used in this project so I had little use for the internet in this area of my work.
Social networking was a very important part of my planning as I used facebook to target my potential audience and ask them questions relevant to my research.I did this in the form of a questionairre. The repsonses to this helped me make informed decisions on what type of conventions I should be including in my project based on what the expectations of the audience were.
My blog was also important as it enabled me to to keep track of my planning and research and also provided evidence that I had done this work.
To help communicate with my audience I used youtube. I u loaded my work and used the comments left on it to build some useful feedback which helped me analyse where I could have improved my work and showed me which areas I needed to develop.

Lyrics

These are the lyrics for the song we will be working on.

Say goodbye to summer

Written By:Phil Cook, Maks Szymanski And Will Harris

CAPITALS=Screams

Verse 1
when im with you things are clearer,
the sun is setting in the sky,
promises made that can't be kept,
promises made to you and I

Chorus
and i'll say goodbye to summer,
and say hello to rain,
say goodbye to those broken hearts that never change,

Verse 2
Your face is red from crying,
and im sure that mine is to,
my heart is slowly dieing,
in the space that once was you,

Chorus
and i'll say goodbye to summer,
and say hello to rain,
say goodbye to those broken hearts that never change,

Bridge(Screamed)
They're gunna take you away from me forever,
They're gunna take you away from me forever

Bridge 2/Outro(Screamed)
I'll never see you again,
I'll never feel you again,
I'll never see you again,
I'll never love you again

Audience research

For my audience research I created a questionnaire aimed to gather suitable and valuable information to help me in my project.
The questionnaire was made up of the following questions:

Questionnaire

The Genre(Rock/Synth Rock)
1) What sort of features do you expect in a video of this genre?

2) Please list some music videos you think are good examples of the genre?

3) Do you feel that there is a wide audience for this genre?

Our Plan
1) Do you think that the bands music is a good example of the genre?

2) Do you think that the band will appeal to a large target audience?

3) Do you think that the initial video idea will be successful?

4) Would a video make you more inclined to listen to the band?

5) Looking at the lyrics do you think that the concept of the video fits the lyrics?

Here is an example response:
The Genre(Rock/Synth Rock)
1) What sort of features do you expect in a video of this genre?-- well in a way its more metal/rock instead of synth/rock, but videos in that area kinda have the band playing with a crowd round them with a story line going on, so it has two parts in a way, or they can be done seperately.

2) Please list some music videos you think are good examples of the genre? well your best bet is to look at last summer by lost prophets, i say that because it does sound pretty close to it, so for this one i'd be carefull because they have either done it accidently or on purpose, either way thats the vid you should look at, also look at funeral for a friend vids aswell....from both there earliy stuff right up to there latest....(recommended for early: This years most open Heartbreak, and for lastest: kicking and screaming) (but most funeral for a friend vids are good just ask me =])

3) Do you feel that there is a wide audience for this genre? - there is but again you have to watch it because there are a lot of bands now in that genre starting to sound too much like eachother, and listening to the rest of those guess stuff they are doing the same, nothing really seems to stand out to me

Our Plan
1) Do you think that the bands music is a good example of the genre?- not really as i have said the genre is getting a bit crowded, and best example locally would be dividing the line, but for a small project for your course they seem idea, as long as you can get a good quality audio and not some myspace recording.

2) Do you think that the band will appeal to a large target audience? - they could do if they have some strong songs, at the moment they need to get working!

3) Do you think that the initial video idea will be successful?
yeah i think the inital idea is good, it touchs on some issues like family break ups n stuff which, i know is a bit stereotyping, but most kids into this genre of laided back metal go throught this or something similar.i know its a weird way of thinking but its kinda true lol......but again think something different cause there are too many vid about that kinda of gf bf flashback stuff...just have a major brain storming sesh =]

4) Would a video make you more inclined to listen to the band? Not really for me its more about the music vid...but if the vids catch then i'll be more than likely to watch the whole thing than just go onto another

5) Looking at the lyrics do you think that the concept of the video fits the lyrics?
yeah i do think the lyrics fit, but again try n think of something that is different like a guy on the running away but missing the love of his life brings him back or something, or he could be on the run from the law and can never go back.

Hope this was helpfull for you and if you need anymore help just gimme a call or drag me along on the day you shot n i'll just blurt out ideas at you lol...cause thats the field im moving into slowly =] seeing as i love music and i used to direct stuff, so i will be more than happy to get involved n help you out =]

Facebook Page
We also made a facebook page as we felt that due to the target audience this was a very appropriate way to communicate with them.

Question 1b Media language and audience

How did I use editing to target an an audience of the sci-fi action genre?

In my AS production I spent a lot of time editing it. For example in the final shots of the video I used a lot of jump cuts as this connotes the danger and speed that the audience expect. I also used a lot of close ups of important shots for example the close up of the gun which builds excitement and suspense.
Also the jump shots of the victim falling over connote vunerability which is another aspect the audience expect.

Question 1 - Creativity and Genre

In my project I feel that I have used both creativity and generic conventions. For example I have used typical conventions of a music video of the same genre, but have also added an unique twist.
Conventions that I have followed include the shots between the band and storyline, i decided to use this as I feel that it makes the video more interesting.

Audience Research and Existing Products

After showing our pitch to our classmates we decided we needed to do some more research into the audience of our chosen genre.
We therefore came up with this questionnaire.

Existing Products

Above is the video for 'Tears don't fall' by Bullet for my valentine who are one of the bands influences. This video is a good example of the genre. It has a storyline mixed with shots of the band which is an approach I will be using in my own work.I like the dark, high contrast look of the video and this is the style I would like to use in my own video as it makes the band easily recognisable within the genre.

Above is the video for 'Streetcar' by Funeral for a Friend, another one of the bands influences. Again they have run a storyline alongside shots of the band. They also have added sound clips to add to the story.

Permissions

We emailed the band to get permission to use their material. Below is the email we sent and the response

Our Email
Dear Steady Pedro!,.
We are two A level media students in the final year of our course. Our project for this year is to produce a music video accompanied by a digipack cover and a magazine advert.
We have been listening to your music and feel that it is perfect for our project as we have been looking for a band of your genre.
Due to exam board regulations we need written permission to use your material. Would it be possible for us to use your track ‘saying goodbye to summer’ and possibly images of the band?
Many thanks
Emily Humphries and Emilyjane Griffin

Response
Dear Emily and Emilyjane

We would be honoured for you to use our song within your college project. So yes you may use it, could we possibly ask you to send us a copy of the video? And if we like it will it be possible for us to use it on our myspace page for our fans to watch?

Many thanks

The guys from Steady Pedro

Treatment

Working Title
For my project I will be using the song 'Saying Goodbye to Summer' by local band Steady Pedro - www.myspace.com/steadypedro.

Concept
For the video I have chosen to show the story of a young teenage boy and conflicts in his life. I will be showing a contrast between a very happy life with his girlfriend and a broken home atmosphere. This will be acheived by different editing and settings to show a clear contrast.

Purpose
The purpose of the video is to promote the song, the band and to emphasise the meaning behind the lyrics.

Desired outcome
My desired outcome is to create publicity for the band and to make the meanings and values of the song clear. Also i want to get the music out to the desired audience.

Audience
My target audience is fans of bands such as Bullet for my valentine, Avenged Sevenfold and Enter Shikari. They would be aged 15-21 and enjoy live music.

Overall Style and look
What sort of texts are you influenced by?

My main influences for this project are existing music videos but also still photographs in magazines related to the genre such as 'KERRANG!' and 'Rolling Stone'.
This is because they are similar to the product I want to create. For example this the the video for 'Paint your target' by Fightstar http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsaA3E0likQ

What sort of texts might you want to be different to?
It is easy to distinguish texts that I do not want my product to be similar to.As I am trying to emphasise a deep meaning in the lyrics I want the video to also be meaningful and not simply something to look at while the song is playing. My chosen genre however is not usually associated with such videos so it is easy to find inspiration. Other genres tend to have videos which merely objectify women and i feel that this takes meaning away from the actual song and is therefore not a suitable approach for me. For example here is the video for 'Call on me' by Eric Prydz http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_fCqg92qks&feature=fvst

Health and Safety

Our location, although very effective, provides us with a few health and safety issues. We are planning to record some of our video at Powick ‘Beach’ which is a embankment on the side of the river themes. This area is often used for small social gatherings.
Obviously this means water will be present. Although we will not filming in the water we will be taking lifesaving rings and of course be checking that all our actors can swim. Aswell as this we both have advanced first aiding and one of us has lifeguarding experience.
